C. Whitlow
EN 1313 High Intermediate
Time: 2 Weeks -- 1 week for Grammar; 1 week for Vocabulary

Objectives:
  1. Students will write suggestions using the modal verbs used for possibility and necessity.
  2. Students will distinguish between the modals used for possibility and necessity by producing an audio selecting using these modals.
  3. Students will demonstrate an ability to reason deductively and inductively using modal forms.
  4. Apply knowledge of root words and prefixes to determine the meaning of unknown words
  5. Explain how a prefix changes the meaning of a word.
  6. Compose sentences with words that contain prefixes.

This two-week unit focuses on global warming. You will listen, speak, write, and read about global warming as you practice English. The vocabulary lesson will increase your vocabulary by learning how to use the prefixes, -re and
-de to determine meanings of unknown words. Additionally, you will learn how to make suggestions and express the probability of an event happening by using modals.
Week 1: Grammar - Modals
Week 2: Vocabulary - Prefixes

PART 1: MOTIVATION: "The Shadows" by Sandel
A. Click on the music video, "The Shadows". Listen to the song and look at the video. Ask yourself what could happen if the human race does not change our lifestyle. Later in this lesson, you will write your ideas.

B. The songwriter, Sandel, writes about the effects of global warming. Her theme is that we must change our ways or global warming will take over the world. In her video, you can see that glaciers are melting, more and more floods are destroying cities, and the climate is getting hotter.

C. In this week's lesson, you will work on modal verbs. The line form Sandel's song has a modal in it. "But there was something missing from their talk. It was something that could change us all." This sentence lets us know that an event could happen.

PART 2: LESSON:
A. What are Modal verbs? They are verbs that express ideas such as possibility, permission,
obligation and necessity. You will use modals when you write persuasive e texts and
research papers. (OPTIONAL: Above is a music video of "I Will Survive". This song has modal verbs throughout it. Listen to the modals stated. Also, think about how we can help the earth to survive.)

B. Modal verbs do not have subject verb agreement. (“-s” when speaking of the third person.)

  • Examples:
    • She should recycle paper.
    • It must be stopped.

C. When speaking in the negative, use “not”.
  • Examples
    • He should not pollute. (shouldn’t)
    • The polar bears might not survive global warming.

D. Open the Handout link. Handout This chart shows you the modal verbs and when to use
them. Bookmark this website this as reference.
1. You will notice that "must" and "might" both can be used when you discuss the chances of
an event happening. The word you choose will depend on how strong the chances of an
event happening. For example, if there is 95% chance of rain, and there are cumulus
clouds in the sky, it must mean rain. However, if there is a 10% chance of rain and
there is no cloud in the sky, it might rain.

E. For additional review, view the PowerPoint attached. There is a quiz at the end of the
PowerPoint. Take the quiz and submit your results.

PART 3: ACTIVITIES
A. Read the article on Global Warming. This article offers suggestions on how humans can slow
down global warming. There are many modals to relate actions and results. Pay attention to
how the modals are used. Are they used to express probability or to express an opinion?
Global Warming

B. Click on the Cloze link. Here is one paragraph from the article with modals missing. Write
the correct modal to complete the sentence. Remember, there might be more than one
correct answer. It depends on how strong your opinion is or how strong the probability of the
action happening. Cloze Activity

C. Below is a link with two pictures of the same location. The bottom picture shows the effects of global warming. Each student will add two tags. For each tag, write a sentence. On one tag, make a suggestion about global warming. On the second tag, express a probability that could be caused from global warming. Your sentences do not have to be related to the picture.

Express Your Thoughts

D. Speak and Say Modals: Now you will practice speaking with modals. Follow the directions:
1. Download the software "Audacity". It is free.
2. You will record at least two sentences into the recorder. One sentence will be a suggestion
about global warming. The second sentence will express a probability that could be caused
from global
warming. (These sentences could be the same two as the sentences that you wrote for the
picture above.
3. Save your recording as a .wav file. Then post your recording link in the table below.
4. Everyone will listen to each other's recordings and add your comments to the blog.
