Prefixes

Objectives:
  • Apply knowledge of root words and prefixes to determine the meaning of unknown words
  • Explain how a prefix changes the meaning of a word.
  • Compose sentences with words that contain prefixes.

PART 1: INSTRUCTION: READING

1. A prefix is a syllable that is added to the beginning of a root word to form a new word. A root word is the base word. For example the word “write” is a base word. We add the prefix “re” to the base word. Base Word New Word
write rewrite
2. Now the new word is “rewrite” which means to "write again". The new word has a different meaning.

3. Look at the word prefix. It is made up from two parts: pre and fix. Pre means before, and fix means attached. Pre is a syllable that is placed before the root which in this case is fix.

4. Prefixes are useful because if we know how to identify them and their meaning, we can learn the meaning of the new word and improve our vocabulary.
